Understanding BCC

At the National Centre for Health Promotion we understand Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) as a participatory communication process between health promoters and people seeking health care and information for healthier life styles. Based on thorough research and dialogue aiming to understand the information needs of the people we communicate with, we produce and distribute informative and entertaining publications and electronic media productions that can support behaviour change in favour of healthier life styles.

We do not believe that BCC alone will bring about healthier lifestyles and improved health care. In order for people to change their behaviour, supporting relevant facilities and services need to be available and accessible. In addition, a health supportive legislation with positive regulations is also an important element needed to reinforce an environment conducive to the health behaviour change of people. Coordination of BCC activities and health service provision is therefore an essential aspect of our approach to BCC.

By engaging in a participatory BCC process we seek to strengthen community ownership over the communication process and thereby stimulate a demand for quality health care as well as ensure that health promotion becomes relevant to, as well as reflects, the needs of communities. After all health promotion is about healthier lifestyles for healthier communities.
